I only have one New Years Resolution this year. It is a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "The only gift is a portion of thyself."
I have broken this down into several ways I can commit to doing this through out the year. One of those commitments is to be a better mom, hence "giving a portion of myself" to my family. I can be a better mom if I am not stressed, one way I accomplish this is through working out...running! I usually run listening to music, stuff with a fast beat. But this year I have decided to listen to the "Ensign" while running. I downloaded it onto my MP3 from the church website for free. I figure it might help me to feel the spirit in my life more. So today was the first time I was going to run with out my normal music. How did it go, you ask? Today was proof that I am making a good choice in doing this, because there were a ton of things that "went wrong" and it felt like someone just didn't want me to hear the inspirational messages that the Ensign offers. First: the kids were really cranky this morning, so I almost didn't go. Second: It was really cold outside, so I almost didn't go. Third: My ear warmer thing was in the washing machine, so I almost didn't go. Fourth: My shoes were having some weird issues, so I almost didn't go. Fifth: My ear buds were having technical difficulties, I actually had to stop running 2 different times to try and get them to work better, so I almost just turned it off. But I just kept at it. In the end it was an amazing run, with the great insights that I need to be hearing. I am pretty sure this will become a new habit for me...helping "Give a portion of my (best) self" to my family.
